June 2007 Newsletter

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE MAY 17, 2007

First, the good news. Dave Cadwallader, new Idaho Fish and Game Department Clearwater Region Supervisor, will be our speaker at the June 6 meeting. Plan to attend, and bring your questions for Dave!

Second, a BIG THANKS to Mike Washburn, for assuming duties of both the club Secretary AND Newsletter Editor.

Third, a big Thanks to Scott Rinebold of Lewiston Pistol Club (and ours) for the set of shelves he built (and donated) for the 6-bench side. It will help, especially during M1 Garand matches.

Fourth, there are a lot of ideas being written down in the pad on the counter at the range, for Grant Applications. We need somebody to step up and volunteer to prepare the grant application(s), otherwise it won't get done. Applications must follow a specific format and must be delivered to Friends of the NRA (usually) by about November 1. The Club's Board of Directors will determine which ideas go forward as grant application(s).

Last, the bad news : RANGE OFFICERS ARE GETTING SCARILY SLOPPY ABOUT SAFETY AND PLAIN SLOPPY ABOUT MAINTENANCE!

Case in Point: Sunday May 6 there were one RO and two RO trainees on duty. They allowed two individuals to enter the 18 bench side of the range and place their rifles muzzles downrange on shootingNews:News: benches, while the line was cold and someone was setting targets down range! This is unconscionable-it is against all the safety rules this range has, and anyone been injured, the range would be shut down today! RO'S: PAY ATTENTION! YOU KNOW THE RULES! MAKE SURE EVERYBODY FOLLOWS THEM! This club has been through this discussion before: There is NO handling of weapons on either side of the range during non-match shooting when the line has been declared cold! Period!

Second case in point: When a firearm malfunctions on the line, it should be removed from the line and not waved about or attempted to be fired in an effort to make it work! Same group.

Now, for maintenance: Brass isn't being picked up-shooters need reminding; The bathroom needs cleaning-Really!(clean it when there are 2 RO's on duty); The pump has been left on several times this year; The Public Address system has been left on twice for the entire week; Red or yellow lights have been left on; Baffles have been left up, more than a few times; A $3,000 rifle was left in a case on the 18 bench side-no one found it until the owner called Dean N., who drove out at 7:30 PM on a Sunday and retrieved it; The cash register has been left on after Sundays; Clean the coffee pot-at least once in a while!

Last, the MONEY BAGS: DO NOT GO BY KEN JACKS' EARLIER THAN 0700/7:00 AM TO PICK THEM UP!!!

For those of you who did not attend the last general meeting, all of the above was discussed except what happened on May 6. I don't want to see us deteriorate to the point that RO's have to initial a check list, just like is done in the men's room at Albertsons and Home Depot. Please-follow the Range Open/Close check list under the glass on the counter, and KEEP FIREARMS SAFETY IN MIND AT ALL TIMES!! THIS RANGE IS THE ONLY ONE WE HAVE. THANK YOU.
